I'm turning the corner now, and as I come into the view of two guys in a
cement truck. They're looking at me as if I'm nuts. They probably think I'm talking to
myself.
Oh, well, it's just a primal fear of the unfamiliar. One of the reasons we are
alive today. Back when we lived in caves, most unfamiliar things
were dangerous. And the Neanderthal who avoided strange things, lived to pass on his
fears. I just wish these guys weren't following me.
Anyway, this tendency to reject the unfamiliar must be coded into our genes. But that
doesn't mean we can't overcome it. Imagine the courage of the
first hunter-gatherer who decided to cultivate crops instead of kill. "You guys go on
ahead and get us some sabertooth. I'm gonna hang around here today and plant these
seeds." How well do you think history's first farmer ate that night?
Today we have the luxury of being able to try new things. Because if we fail, we have
support systems like bankruptcy courts to bail us out and paramedics to rush to our
rescue.
Which brings me back the guys from the cement truck. You see, they thought my tape
recorder was a mobile phone. They just wanted to make a phone
call. I guess I shouldn't be so suspicious of the unfamiliar. |
