I am reminded of a sci-fi short story where countries sent a small number of combatant representatives to a death match, agreeing to be bound by the outcome. David and Goliath had the same scenario.
The only thing that destroys hate is love. However, should we buy their agreement not to terrorize us with food, medicine and "the good life?" Personal sacrifice of time, of life - not money - proves love. What/how much/whom/how many are we willing to sacrifice in the name of peace? How much do we love them? I think I know why they are angry at us, but to make sure, we should find out exactly why they're angry at us. Then try to find out if we can make them happy without making other people angry. Try to make a compromise with them instead of retaliating. That would be stronger and more effective on our part to fix terrorism. The fanatics who flew planes to murder people in big buildings were braver, more religious, and more patriotic than the vast majority of Americans. Religion, patriotism and the courage to die killing people are all dangerously over-rated. Let's try for plain sanity and tolerance.
Set up Iraqi and Afghan (and next Syrian and Iranian) restaurants near the municipal offices in all major US cities. After all, it's hard to hate people whose food you eat.
Invest the money that's going into the war in a massive education program for the American population about world affairs. The US population has been starved of information about what goes on outside the US for generations and it is this that has led their leaders to their current miopic state.

From all the previous ideas I've read on here, only TWO, really get close to dealing with the problem.
The first, was about feeding people.
No-one can deny, that hunger is a major factor of unrest throughout the world today.
Unfortunately, no-one bothered to look further, to find out WHY there is so much hunger in the world.
The answer to that is GREED.
Majority of developed countries, treat the undeveloped countries as something to be raped and pillaged, as long as their investments show a dividend.
No-one is concerned that the actions of these investors may result in creating an economic disaster for the people of that country.
Therefore, one way of tackling the subject, would be less GREED, and more commitment to building up these
underprivileged countries.
Unfortunately, in the short term, there are no dividends in such a policy.
So the slaughter will go on.
The second suggestion, voiced the point of the US to get OUT of ALL Muslim countries, and
desist from manipulating events in those countries, to again further their dividends, no matter at what cost to the inhabitants.
The chances of that happening ????

segregate completely the Palestinian from the Jews y create jobs en Palestina through a fund invested in creating a large computing research center in Gaza or Cisjordania to employ the kids that we see every day on tv throwing rocks. How about if we behave like Wal-Mart? Loss leaders for peace... Let's go into these countries with populations that are so poor and only given anti-U.S. propaganda and aid the hell out of them. Let's pack up food, medicine, blankets, books and radios and drop them into Afghanistan. If the people are fed and healthy they can defeat the Taliban themselves.

I believe a strategic alliance (note: not a takeover) should be formed between two of the world's biggest faith service providers. Mergers maximise global reach, streamline costs and redirect unsustainable competitive energies into core business activities such as service provision, recruitment, corporate identity re-creation and product diversification. As member of liberal western democracies we must be slow to anger and wise in our responses. We must also reflect on our own values and relative to that of other societies. On the defensive front, we might start moving away from piling people on top of each other in ever-taller phallic symbols and shift to an emphasis on telecommuting.
For every terrorist in the airplanes that crashed the USA should do a positive act towards a country they directly or indirectly terrorize themselves. For instance: ABANDON HELMS-BURTON. Besides better political relations it will directly improve the situation of millions of innocent people that are being punished day after day by USA
boycotts and have nothing to do with any terrorist acts or even political issues against the USA.
How can a country state it's free if it deliberately takes the freedom of others?
Let's take this opportunity to face our real worst enemy--blind faith. Maintain respect and tolerance for responsible belief, opinion, speculation, and ideas. But make an all-out effort to persuade away the kind of uncritical, intolerant, do-or-die, all-or-nothing, slavish adherence to revelations from gods that make fatwas, Crusades, intefadas,
Inquisitions, and suicide bombings not only possible
but devoutly desired.
Why is this terrorism happening? Is it because of the USA's support of Israel against Palestine? Because the USA used Afghanistan during the cold war and then abandoned them?
If so, Bush should go to Afghanistan and Palestine and beg for forgiveness. Such a show of humility could save thousands of lives.
My solution to the problem is simple. The US should use its considerable intelligence capabilities to track the money supply. Find out where bin Laden is holding his assets (I'm sure they already know) and freeze these assets/bank accounts etc. Without the financial backing they will soon be rendered ineffective. If the banks or money funds etc will not cooperate they could be dealt with through the international courts or by
boycott. This is standard procedure for dealing with criminal activity, and one must ask why this is not being done.
Let all the nation's leaders of the world agree on a 5 minute or at least 1 minute time when all the people of the world will pray for world peace and radiate LOVE ESPECIALLY to all the terrorists. Let it occur at EXACTLY the same time; let the whole world stop for 1 minute and JUST DO IT! If in 1 day, extremely positive results are not seen, continue EVERY DAY. Better yet, let there be a time every day from now on when everyone prays for world peace and radiates LOVE until THERE ACTUALLY IS WORLD PEACE!
A 3rd idea:
This could be started NOW with all the suspects in jail that have recently been arrested.
IF we catch Bin Laden or any of his cohorts or protectors or followers, try this: put them in the highest security prison but treat them with utmost respect, give them good food, flowers in their room, good books to read, be polite and kind, ask if they'd like anything else (nothing they could use as a weapon); THEN make them watch and hear the agonies, cries and grief and stories of ALL the people who have been affected by this atrocity. Let them watch on video or TV each family being interviewed, each wife who lost a husband, each child who lost a parent, each friend, each co-worker, etc.; make them watch this until the grief of all the
families and friends of all 6000 people has been seen. Possibly this would have an impact...I don't know.
Ask the terrorists if they have anything to say. If not, or if it's negative, then have the people, as many as possible, come in themselves in person and talk face to face with the terrorists..... this HAS to work. This is what I've been on TV that we are doing with criminals.
A 2nd idea is: some totally fearless people who could parachute into the midst of the Afghan people and distribute food, medicine, and info. Those people could possibly learn how to protect themselves on all levels with prayers and mantras and visualizations of golden light around them before jumping. I have heard how sometimes on the battlefield that there are heroes whom the enemy cannot touch because of the golden light around them.

The leaders of the United States must open up their hearts and minds to other lifestyles and
belief systems. They must ask questions and try to learn, instead of dictate to the world how everyone should live by their standards. Make them ask; "why do some people hate is so much and what can we do to reach out and come to understanding each other better?"

Apologize to the Middle Eastern countries for having interfered in their lives. Get the U.S. completely out before it turns into another Vietnam. I think we will not hear anymore from these people once we understand that they consider us trespassers on their holy lands. I don't think they actually want to destroy the U.S., they just want "us" out and to leave them alone. Is that too hard to do? Sure, we'll lose some face and maybe get mocked but that's preferable to losing more American lives--on our own soil.
What about airlifting food and needed goods to Afghan to offer love instead of war.
Prompt those he interviews for peaceful, respectful alternatives to
violent retaliation.
Drop food and clothing in Afghanistan marked as tributes to each of
the victims of the Sept. 11th tragedy.
Write and sing an inspirational song that doesn't promote hatred and violence.

We go to war in a whole new way. We begin at the boarder with our Muslim
allies and as each village is captured, we begin to rebuild it. We build
schools/clinics. We provide solar energy and good wells. We liberate the women
and support them. We heal the children and get rid of all the landmines. We
train, support and nurture a people that have been brutalized for years.
We do this village by village until the country is headed in a positive
direction and the fanatics have no ammunition (hate) and will be isolated. The
Multinationals can still reap the money and power they need and we will have
ended the cycle of violence for which there is no way out.

Idea: Provide psychological/emotional healing support to all of our attack victims and all their relations. This can be accomplished by contacting the groups devoted to co-counseling, peer-counseling, non-violent communications, clearing facilitation, etc. and asking that they encourage their members to offer their support to the

Learn from countries like South Africa that have created a fragile peace out of a seemingly impossible situation. Create scenario stories that will show the world the consequences of acting in this way or that (four different stories based on credible extrapolations from current trends). Publicise these stories everywhere so people know what future they are choosing to live in.
Our elected government officials have taken advantage of US citizens and citizens of many nations to serve there own interests for many decades. Until we right the wrong which has helped to feed the animosity towards our country, we will continue to struggle with terrorism.
You will never defeat an enemy through violence alone. This war is about beliefs and ideas. If we make an effort to admit where we have been wrong in the past, we may be able to bring our adversaries closer to a resolve that we can disagree without resorting to violence and terrorism. We can find a medium ground if everyone is willing to give a little.
The American people must first VOTE and elect leaders to political offices that serve human interests. The anger felt towards the USA is the result of a government who serves its own special interests, not the interests of its citizens or any other nation. This anger is not just felt abroad but also at home. Have we forgotten Oklahoma City?
My ideas are around tapping into the "excesses" we have in U.S. to balance with the "deficits" in Middle East and perhaps specifically in Afghanistan. For example, there are 11,000 Americans turning 55 daily in the U.S. now. As us baby-boomers have more time on our hands from early retirements and many of us have more money than we need, we could form a type of peace corps as part of a Marshall Plan type idea.
Create a Palestinian "Marshall Plan" which builds streets and sewers, sets up industry and a port. Have all the industrialized countries of the world set up plants in Palestine, establish college branches there, and make Palestinians self-reliant.
Educate people who subscribe to a pollyannaish world-view, that there really is evil in the world. The enemy objects to our existence no matter what level of involvement the West has. Sometimes peace requires force.
Educate the people that are being suppressed by the terrorists.
Set up joint businesses between citizens of the US and the materially poorest countries, to build understanding and interdependency.
Massively relocated all Israeli and Palestinian youth, to live together and go to school together in a removed, neutral location, like Greenland.
Citizen swap, where thousands of Afghans live in the US in exchange for thousands of US citizens in Afghanistan, and other areas of suffering.
1. Take lots of exercise (use up the aggression/anger/pain in some way)
2. Take a break - go somewhere calm and beautiful on my own.
3. Arrange to meet with "the other side" on neutral ground at a weekend retreat in a safe (!!) location
4. Meditate together to find a solution that is 1+1 = 3.
This requires accepting that the other side has a valid point of view.
This requires Dialogue.
This can take months.
This idea is too idealistic when we have President Bush in the White House.

Most rock stars I know would just want to get away from it all and get laid.
However, what if...they were to get together and hold a massive concert (like Bob Geldof's) for peace? And use the proceeds to promote human rights everywhere.
They'd have to deal with a lot of reaction from hard-liners and white supremacists and all that stuff. Is it too unsafe?
She'd go visit the people and offer them her hand. What if an army of peace-loving Americans and others were to invade Afghanistan and let them know we mean them no harm?
Throw money at the areas where terrorism incubates - in the form of relentless exposure to stories about human beings in USA - not the
sex/drugs/trigger-happy image they have, but the other side of the story. The one with mothers and children and ordinary decent people making a life for themselves. Drop books and films, not bombs.
By throwing money at it and using the media to bring it home to Americans that other ethnic and religious groupings are all too human too and feel pain just like Americans do. Would they want the mafia to be seen as representatives of American way of life, for example? Tell good stories about real people. Advertise friendship everywhere. Promote empathy.
We need more media covering the history of conflicts in the middle east. Cover both sides of the issues fairly. When we understand the incredible injustices, suffering and loss of life in many Arab nations, our
judgment softens and compassion deepens.
Measures to "prevent" terrorism--tighter security, more
dastardly intelligence, "smoke them
out of their holes--only treat a SYMPTOM and do not address the real cause of terrorism.
Namely a deep-seated hatred of the United States. Until we address that
cause and accept that there may be legitimate reasons for the hatred, we will NEVER eliminate terrorism.
Provide similar levels of support to Palestine that we provide to Israel; if we are unwilling to do so, reduce our support of Israel. Otherwise, we will continue to lack a credible claim to neutrality.
Impose a UN peacekeeping force between Israel and Palestine, as we have done in Kosovo & Macedonia via NATO.
Commit the country to a 10 year energy self-sufficiency program centered around renewable resources. We can thereby remove our military presence from the Middle East, a major provocation for radical Islam.
Think of the problem as a patient we love (the world) with a cancer (terrorism) we hate. How to remove the destroyer without destroying the patient.
Personally I would like to suggest something completely different-- a Marshall plan for Afghanistan. Go in with billions of dollars and build them schools and bridges and roads. Not that,
seriously, I could expect this to be done, but can you imagine anything that would make the terrorists madder?

First need to find out: what exactly is it the attackers want to accomplish and why. What are they thinking, why attack the U.S. What is to important that 19 people are willing to sacrifice their lives.
This is indeed a war and like a war it requires a multipronged attack. A major factor in the defeat of Japan was our ability to break their communication code and protect ours. We need a
