We of the developed world, so long physically safe with our middle-class and better lifestyles, are beginning to realize we are of one world, that none of us will feel safe until all of us feel safe. We must change from a militaristic model of coping with those who differ with us to a medical model, and beyond this, to even a psychotherapeutic model, where the goal of vengeance or ridding oneself of a diseased part is replaced by a healing model. Every mind is in need of healing. In this model, there is nothing to be cut out. What is sick must be transformed. But healing of the mind cannot begin until everyone is provided with freedom from physical want. Once this comes to be, much of the desperation that leads to violence will pass away. It is my understanding that the money that is spent on weapons would be more than adequate to provide food, clothing and shelter to each and every soul on the earth. Now we see that our weapons have not protected us. Shall we pretend that in the future they will be able to do so? Shall we kill everyone who disagrees with us. Which one of the six billion of us will be left? Many are afraid that if we take apart our war industry, there will be nothing left for them to do. People as yet do not realize how much each person can contribute to the healing of another. Instead of being the strongest nation on earth, let us become the most loving nation on earth, a enlightened nation devoted to healing instead of a frightened nation devoted to protecting its specialness regardless of the human suffering this entails. Our choice is between death and life, between murder and sharing. Now we begin to see we really have no choice. Return to Idea Bank |
