Our government's overbearing attitude toward the Middle East is petroleum-driven, so it's imperative to press for high fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks and other conservation measures. These are middle term solutions. A wild immediate idea would be to recruit US citizens to travel to Afghanistan with full media coverage and distribute themselves among civilian populations to act as human shields against military attack.
